· Firefighters quickly extinguished the initial fire while additional firefighters made access into the warehouse to confirm the fire had not spread and begin with smoke removal from inside.

· Employees of Stater Brothers distribution assisted firefighters with removing the involved trailer away from the building to a safe area and the removal of water from inside the warehouse.

Suspicious Fire Fully Engulfs Home

Additional Information:

Fire Crews dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire.
Arriving Firefighters discovered a single-family home heavily involved with fire on the interior and spreading rapidly throughout the attic and breaching the roof.
Fire suppression and mop-up efforts to the home were extensive due to “pack rat” storage conditions throughout. Fire attack also slowed by an actively arcing power-line in the rear yard.
Due to an early roof collapse and extensive fire involvement, firefighters took defensive positions and performed an aggressive exterior attack.
Firefighters were able to successfully protect the adjacent homes from the radiant heat and also kept the fire confined to the residence of origin, despite heavy flames and strong wind conditions.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and hot-spots fully extinguished for an additional hour.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but has been labeled suspicious in nature. The property was an abandoned home and no one was displaced as a result of the blaze.

· 4 Day Hikers including a Father and 3 Sons ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old alerted 911 dispatchers they had been trapped in a steep ravine after hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains in northeast San Bernardino.

· San Bernardino Police and Fire units assisted by San Manual FD responded to the general location of the 911 report. SB County Sheriff’s helicopter assisted ground units in locating the trapped hikers until high winds forced them from the area.

· Fire Department Paramedics, Firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue Team members battling high winds, falling temps and nightfall were able to make their way over very steep terrain above the trapped hikers. Utilizing complex rope systems, Firefighters after several hours were able to pull the hikers one-by-one to safety.

· Once safely off the mountain the hikers were treated at the scene for minor scrapes and bruises and released.

Additional information: Two San Bernardino City Fire units returning from a medical call reported and responded to a fire in the 700 block of North Arrowhead Avenue. When units arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames on the South portion of a two-story home extending upward into the second floor and attic area. The fire also threatened several detached structures and vehicles adjacent to the property. Due to the heavy smoke and flames, Firefighters became concerned with the structural integrity of the home and used appropriate operational modes to combat the fire. Firefighters performed a primary search of the fire while fighting the main body of the fire, finding no one within the structure. No other structures were damaged.

The home will be turned over to Code Enforcement due to the homes, weakened supporting structural members.

This morning at 9:27 A.M. fire dispatchers received a call from an alarm company reporting a smoke detector had been activated at a multi unit senior apartment complex located on

East Gilbert Street

. The first unit was on scene at 9:37 A.M. and reported to incoming units there was moderate smoke coming out of a first story apartment door on the Eastside of the building. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines into the first floor to extinguish the fire while simultaneously going door to door through the complex to insure all occupants were out of harms way. Due to the complexity of this senior complex and the potential for multiple evacuations and rescues a second alarm was called to assist on scene units. The fire was under control with in thirty minutes of the first call. A 65-year-old female who was an occupant of the complex, was treated for minor smoke inhalation and transported to a local area hospital for further observation.

City fire investigators were called to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation as to what started this fire. After interviewing the occupant of the involved apartment it was determined that a smoldering discarded cigarette into a waste basket was the cause of this fire.

Update 08/26/2011:

Further investigation and evidence showed the buildings fire suppression system did in fact activate and was a contributing factor in stopping this fire from spreading through out the involved apartment and the adjoining apartments. The San Bernardino City Fire Department would like to remind all its residents that smoke detectors do save lives. Smoke detector batteries should be changed at least twice a year at a minimum. Fire Department 911 dispatchers received the emergency call at 1:20pm alerting responding units and giving CPR instructions over the phone to the Family.

San Bernardino Fire Department Companies along with Police Department Units arrived on scene within minutes. Police Officers quickly performed CPR until Firefighters arrived a short time thereafter.

Fire Department paramedics administered advanced life support procedures at the scene and during transport by ambulance to Community Hospital of San Bernardino.

Initial reports said that an occupant had exited the home. Firefighters quickly determined that no one else was inside the home. 5 of the City’s twelve fire units responded, containing the fire to the kitchen, laundry room and small portion of the attic. Minor smoke damaged was also found throughout the remainder of the 1200 square foot single-story home. The occupants will not be allowed to re-enter the home due to the damage and will seek shelter with family members. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

• Fire Department Companies arrived on scene within minutes. Firefighters reported major damage to the aircraft as well as leaking fuel, however no active fire and no civilian injuries on the ground.

• Two male occupants had been pulled from the wreckage to safety, where Fire Department Paramedics treated both Victims for life threatening injuries at the scene.

• Both Victims were transported by ground ambulance with Fire Department Paramedics to a local Trauma Center for further treatment.

CHP was on scene and conducted the investigation and has all other information related to the accident. SBFD emergency personnel provided extrication of the patients and medical care on the busy freeway and AMR provided transport to the hospital and assisted with care.

 San Bernardino Fire Department Companies arrived on scene to find the Female driver and Mother of 3 trapped inside her vehicle with moderate injuries. The Children, ages 4 to 10 years of age suffered only minor cuts from flying glass and were being cared for by bystanders.
 Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Crewmembers were called to assist Firefighters cut the roof off the vehicle and, using heavy extrication equipment, were able to safely free the driver.
 The Female Driver, along with Her 3 Children, were treated by Fire Department Paramedics and transported by Ground Ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center for further evaluation.

In the ongoing spirit of cooperation, the San Manuel tribal government is assisting various lead agencies most affected by the storm by lending resources and equipment to their efforts. In the City of San Bernardino one of the most impacted areas is in the Piedmont area in the Northeast section of the City.
Residents that were evacuated during this storm and needed shelter were directed to the American Red Cross that has set up an evacuation shelter at Emanuel Baptist Church located in the City of Highland.

San Bernardino City Officials have declared a Proclamation of a local Emergency. Residents requiring sandbags have been directed to the following locations:

SBFD/SBPD starting receiving numerous 911 calls just after 0600 hrs for flooding issues with homes as well as numerous street /intersection areas throughout the City. The City of San Bernardino EOC has been activated and police and fire units are actively engaged in patrols of the flooded areas throughout the city.

The SBFD & SBPD would like to emphasize that citizens need to stay out of those areas that have sustained flood damage. Any and all that are in those areas that don’t need to be greatly hamper the efforts of rescue and service crews.

The first unit on scene found heavy fire involvement with 50 foot flame lengths to the rear of the home that had worked its way into the structure. An aggressive exterior attack as well as a coordinated interior attack contained the damage to the rear portion of the house.
Two residents were home at the time but exited unharmed. The 101 year old female was transported to a local area hospital for observation. Both residents were displaced due to the damage that was sustained by the fire, Red Cross was requested for the individuals.
The cause of the fire was a possible candle left unattended to the rear of the structure.

Additional information:
The initial report of the incident was for a vegetation fire in the vicinity of 5th and J Street with one engine responding. The unit assigned to the incident noticed a large plume of smoke and called for a full fire response prior to arriving on scene.
The first unit on scene found a grass fire that ignited palm trees and two small residential structures and an unknown rescue situation. The first arriving chief officer called for a second alarm due to the complexity of the incident.
The fire caused heavy exterior damage to both homes; however, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before flames damaged the inside. One resident was home but exited unharmed and the other was away at the time. Both residents were displaced due to the damage that was sustained by the fire, one resident did request assistance from the Red Cross while the other received shelter from family.
In addition to the structure damage, 22 palm trees and approximately a quarter acre of grass burned. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

San Bernardino City Fire with assistance from San Manuel Fire responded to a second alarm brush fire reported near Pacific High School on Perris Hill. The first unit on scene (ME224) reported fire moving uphill with moderate spread. The fire burned a total of fifteen acres. After fire control was obtained, firefighters recognized that favorable conditions existed to conduct a controlled burn that would remove vegetation and increase the defensible space around Pacific High School. The firing operation was conducted in the same area that was previously marked for a prescribed burn that was held off in early June due to unfavorable weather conditions.

On the night of March 22, 2010, The San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a major traffic accident at the intersection of South Waterman Avenue and Wier Road. The high speed collision sent one vehicle off the road way and through an adjacent block wall. The vehicle was left suspended precariously fifteen feet above the back yard below. Block from the wall was propelled through the house below and pieces could be found in the kitchen. The house sustained minor damage.

A homeowner stated, “She thought that a bomb had exploded!” Firefighters were able to calm the terrified homeowner and helped in the search and recovery of her missing dog.

Paramedic Truck Company 221 and Fire Rescue vehicle 230 both joined forces to quickly secure the suspended vehicle and extricate the severely injured driver. The driver was then placed in full spinal precautions and was successfully lowered safely to the ground. There was an ambulance standing by for rapid transportation to the nearest Hospital.

The second vehicle which sustained heavy front end damage had two injured persons. These patents were treated by Paramedic engine 231. Both patients had moderate injuries, were placed in full spinal precautions, and transported to the closest Hospital.

The estimated damage to the wall is $2000.00 and $500.00 to the home. Both vehicles were a total loss.

911 operators received calls for smoke coming from an attic of a single-family residence.

Units from the San Bernardino City Fire Dept. were on scene within minutes. First arriving units reported heavy smoke coming from the residence. Bystanders were attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.

In a coordinated effort firefighters entered the residence to search for victims and rescued the family dog. No injuries were reported.

Fire was under control within minutes and Red Cross was contacted to assist with the displaced residents.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be electrical in nature.

Additional information: When SBFD units arrived they found a late model SUV and a late model coupe with extensive exterior damage. According to CHP, the female driver of the SUV with two toddlers inside plummeted 65 feet off the 330 transition onto the I-210 East bound freeway, landing on the roof of a late model coupe. The woman in the SUV had serious injuries and had to be extricated by firefighters. The two toddlers with minor injuries, were already outside the SUV when fire units arrived, extricated by bystanders. The male driver of the coupe was already outside his vehicle with minor injuries. The woman, male and two toddlers were transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center. East Bound I-210 traffic was backed up for several miles.

• 911 calls were reporting a Hang Glider accident with an injured subject at the Andy Jackson Air Park. The Air Park is located off Devils Canyon road at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, northwest of Cal State San Bernardino.

• San Bernardino Fire units arrived within minutes reporting the pilot overshot the landing zone and crashed into a nearby ravine.

• Fire Department Paramedics, Firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue Team treated the Male Victim’s multiple injuries while in the ravine.

• The Victim was carried out of the ravine by Firefighters on foot and transferred to an awaiting San Bernardino County Sheriffs Air Rescue helicopter, where He was flown to the Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.

At 6:54 p.m. the San Bernardino City Fire and Police departments received multiple 911 calls of a traffic collision involving a vehicle that struck two people riding a bicycle at the intersection of 40th Street and Johnson Street. Fire Department Paramedics responded and were on scene with in five minutes. Upon there arrival they found two teen aged boys lying in the middle of 40th Street, one of the victims approximately 19 years of age had succumbed to his injuries prior to the fire departments arrival and was pronounced dead on scene. The other victim, approximately 15 years of age had critical life threatening injuries and was immediately assessed, treated and transported to a local trauma center were he is listed in critical condition. The boys are believed to be brothers and live in the area were the accident took place.

**The San Bernardino City Fire Department would like to remind people to wear proper safety gear while riding any type of bicycle to help prevent serious injuries, (i.e. helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads) including wearing bright color clothing and or reflective bicycle vests while riding at night. All bicycles should also be equipped with the proper reflective devices if they are to be used at night.

San Bernardino Fire Department crews were dispatched to a small county island known as Arrowhead Farms. First arriving units arrived to find a very small (approximately 500 square foot) single story residence heavily involved with fire with approximately 50% involvement.

Initial reports from bystanders advised that there were two occupants still inside the structure. By the time crews were able to begin an offensive operation, the fire had self ventilated. The fire was quickly extinguished and shortly thereafter the two victims were found inside the house. There were no operable smoke detectors in the home and exits were limited to very small windows and one exit door. The residence did not have electrical service, but several extension cords were found in the house. The extension cords were being supplied by a generator outside of the structure.

One firefighter did suffer a back injury after slipping and falling. He was seen at a local hospital and released. The cause is still under investigation and is being conducted by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson detail.

A vacant and boarded single family residence sustained moderate to heavy damage due to a suspicious fire. The building is owned by the San Bernardino City Unified School District and is secured by chain link fence and boarded. Despite efforts to properly secure the building it appears somebody broke through the back door and ignited a fire.
Arriving fire crews noted fire to the rear of the structure and began a fire attack which brought the fire under control within 15 minutes of arrival. Crews were slowed by security measures taken to protect the vacant structure.
The cause is still under investigation.

A damaged electrical wire caused a fire to ignite near a chimney inside a remodeled home. The home was receiving the finishing touches and was freshly painted when the fire broke out. An electrical wire was energized and while the owners were taking a dinner break away from the home a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the roof near the chimney. Flames were seen shooting out of the roof when the first fire units arrived. A quick response by the fire department and the alert neighbor saved the home from severe damage. The fire was under control in 21 minutes.

ME 231 was dispatched to a report of two people trapped in a stalled vehicle on a flooded street. The incident was upgraded to a water rescue response which included units with swiftwater trained personnel. Upon arrival firefighters found a stalled vehicle with two adults inside. Because of the rising water, a quick rescue was initiated and both victims were moved to safety.

While on scene fire dispatched received reports of a second water rescue less than ¼ mile of the first incident. Fire units re-located and found an elderly woman trapped inside her stalled vehicle. Firefighters were able to move the vehicle to safety and then assist the female from the vehicle.

San Bernardino Police and Public Works Departments provided traffic control to the affected area. No injuries to civilians were reported.

This evening at 5:12 p.m., firefighters from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1891 West Bradley Court. First arriving units reported heavy smoke from the roof of a two-story town house. Weather played a definitive factor as the extent of the fire was initially concealed due to heavy rain and wind. Firefighters employed an aggressive offensive attack ventilating the fire from the roof while deploying multiple hose lines from inside the structure. Initially a second alarm was called for, followed by a third and ultimately, a fourth alarm. The fire took approximately 50 minutes before control was declared. One firefighter was slightly injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Twenty-one residents were displaced and required assistance from the Red Cross. Fire investigators report that a faulty fireplace likely caused the fire although the fire remains under investigation.

Additional information: San Bernardino City Firefighters were initially dispatched to a “smoke investigation”, the single engine company encountered fairly heavy, low hanging smoke, throughout the neighborhood. After several minutes investigating the area the engine company determined the source of smoke was being generated from a single family residential home. The company officer on the responding engine immediately requested back-up by calling for a full structure response to there location. Once additional fire equipment arrived on scene firefighters were able to engage in an aggressive fire attack. The fire was located at 3:49 am and brought under control within 11 minutes.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and caused by children leaving pillows and blankets on top of a floor furnace. The fire could have been tragic, as several children where attending a sleepover and very heavy smoke was pushing out of the house. Fortunately, the children were sent to a baby sitters house so that the mother could shop for “Black Friday” bargains at a local retail store. The home did not have smoke detectors. Firefighters left the scene at 05:25 after an extensive overhaul operation.

Early this morning, firefighters from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire. Arriving units found flames coming from the rear of a house. Smoke could be seen covering the neighborhood homes as fire department units arrived. The home was vacant and secured with a “For Rent” sign in the front yard. Fire units quickly extinguished the fire that was possibly started by a trash-can burning next to the structure and below a patio cover. The fire spread into the attic of the home.

The quick action from the units on-scene kept the damage to the second home minimal. Another smaller trash can was found burning next to the woman’s rear wood garage door. Both fires are under investigation and were very similar in how they were started.

Early this morning, firefighters from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a structure fire in a mobile home park located at 190 North Meridian Avenue. First arriving units encountered a well involved single wide mobile home. Luckily, the mobile home park was located within a hundred feet of Fire Station 229 and a quick response from firefighters stationed there prevented the fire’s spread to other trailers. Three residents that live there were able to escape unharmed. Arson Investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen area but have not determined a definitive cause.

Firefighters from the San Bernardino City Fire Department responded to a single vehicle traffic collision at Perris Hill Park Rd. and Pacific Avenue. The call originated from one of the passengers involved in the crash.

Arriving units discovered that a single vehicle had veered off the road and was teetering precariously on the edge of the flood control wall and was in imminent danger of falling 20 feet down into the bottom of the channel.

Firefighters quickly stabilized and secured the vehicle while simultaneously assessing the passengers for injuries . Rescue crews then utilized the "Jaws of life" and other powered extrication tools to remove the roof and the doors from the vehicle. The driver was determined to be deceased at the scene and one passenger was treated and transported to a local trauma center. The second passenger was seated in the rear of the vehicle and had self extricated prior to the arrival of the SBFD units, and was treated and released at the scene.

San Bernardino Police Dept. is investigating the cause of the crash.

Arriving units discovered that a large underground electrical vault exploded. Two pedestrians were injured when they were struck by debris from the explosion. Both patients were transported to local areas hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Southern California Edison also responded to the incident to secure the vault area and conduct an investigation.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the resident’s wheelchair had stopped working, stranding the resident approximately a half mile from home. Firefighters called in a fire department utility truck equipped with a hydraulic lift gate from Fire Station 230 to bring the resident’s wheelchair home. AMR offered to transport the resident. Upon arrival at the resident’s home, firefighters unloaded the 300 pound plus wheelchair and assisted AMR with helping the resident into his residence.

Firefighting units quickly positioned themselves to protect the mobile home park and began fire suppression efforts. Fire control was attained in thirty minutes, with full containment in just one hour. A total of 1 acre burned. SBFD Arson Investigators concluded the fire intentionally set and issued a citation to a juvenile.
